I am just guessing also. But what I think is being said is that the AM
models are based on the short cars. Which is fine, at least as far as they
go it's fine. But what we lack, and somebody correct me if I'm wrong here,
is passenger cars, RTR or a kit, that are readily available today, not 20
years ago, that are based on the longer prototype cars of 85'. What I
personally like to see in a passenger consist is a combination of
prototypically short cars and prototypically long cars. Those of you who
"closet model" in O gauge/scale will know that K-Line produces cars (for how
much longer we don't know...) in O of lengths that vary from 15" (about 60'
in O) to 18" (about 72' in O) to 21" (about 84' in O). Looks to me like a
passenger car would have to be right at 16 scale inches in length in S to
resemble an 85' car. The rivet counters will fuss about the couplers, etc.,
and rightly so, but that is ABOUT what it would be according to my Mac
calculator. My UP American Models Budd cars are 13.375" which scales up to
about a 71.33~' prototype passenger car, not including the diaphragms (such
as they are) nor the couplers. Just the car body.
I have nothing but admiration for those who advocate buying car sides and
building almost from scratch. Then are true modelers, similar to what I used
to be. But as the years roll by, one has to make some choices, and I want
mine now.
