Dave, Don't worry about the kind of light in the layout room, so window
light is nice, but it leaves the problem of a background. I built a
room above my garage and put in only two windows as required. I put
them near the ceiling so I could put a background behind the tracks. I
put in 10' ceiling in most of the area and I get alot of comments about
the open effect. I have fluorescent fixtures, 3 double tube 8' fixtures
but even those leave the corners somewhat dark. I also have several
strings of track lights that we use for open house etc. I tubes, with
UV protectors, make for general operating/construction lighting. The
track lighting is good to emphases highlights scenes on the layout. My
height is the upper 30's and perhaps up to 40". I had planned building
a mountain to the ceiling (10 ft) but couldn't figure out a simple way
of building it--but would have been fun to do though and really give
scale to the trains!
