Thought I would help in regarding using a 4x8.
Many moons ago I lived upstairs, very steep narrow stairs.
I wanted a 4x8 layout up there. I cut a 1/4 " In half lengthwise. two
2'X8's.
After making a frame work for them I could move them in and bolt them
together.
Anyway a 4x8 does have restrictions as to the track design. If possible
make it 5x10.
This will allow for a more interesting track plan and you will have more
room for scenery.
Another option; I added a 2'x6' foot section to my layout which
allowed me to have a yard
to store my other rolling stock.

Good luck
