For those of us who may appreciate this: Remember that on the ATSF F-unit
Fleet, only the B-units had steam boilers in them. The A-units only had
extra water tanks, and fed that water back to the B's as needed--there were
extra hoses installed and used. I remember being told this for the <99
numbered units, not so sure about the 300-series units, though they were
considered more dual-purpose even though they were warbonnet-painted.

Also, there was a point late in the passenger service era where all the ABBA
sets were broken up into 5-unit sets; either an extra A up front, or A-B
pairs, with the A leading--part of this was an emphasis on having a second
cab facing forward and ready to go if there was a crossing accident.
