There's a list on yahoo dedicated to the use of card systems.  Info is
below.  They discuss methods and so forth and do have some software in their
files archive.
You might get some hints and you can certainly ask questions.

As for me, when I eventually get the layout going, my intention is
point-to-point, but will have a return loop so that I can continous run a
train while I switch a yard or two.  And running DCC, I won't have to worry
about flipping toggles when he gets close to my work area - hopefully.
