Hi all;
A while back someone asked for information on changing the AF coupler to a
more scale-like one on the Flyonel (LAF) Mikado. Perhaps I missed the reply,
but I don't recall seeing one.
Has any one done that procedure?
Couple of other questions:
I have not changed out many couplers from AF to scale, but the few that I
have changed came out darn near exactly where the Kadee coupler gauge
showed.
However, on my SHS Consolidation, the new SHS scale coupler is perhaps 3/32"
inch below where it should be. The engine is the AF hirail version and came
with the AF compatible coupler.
Since in my limited experience this has not happened, my questions are, how
close is close enough? And it looks to me as though it would take some very
careful engineering indeed to bring the coupler height up to perfect: nearly
as I can tell, there seems to be no easy way to either shave off the top of
the coupler box or the bottom of the tender. I have not run the engine on a
layout, so can't say if it might actually uncouple on inclines or curves,
bumps in the roadbed, etc.
Any thoughts appreciated :
