Chris Abbott informed me of the discussions going on here...
I've taken the bait...

The S-MOD single track standards have validity too. I do not think
that the physical standards are that different (height, thickness of
module). There is a difference in control (DCC vs. DC). To me, the
big difference is philosophy (Free-mo members encourage prototype
modeling), it is this philosophy that impressed me about HO Free-mo,
and excited me into initiating the Sn2 Free-mo standards. Such a
philosophy can be utilized in S-MOD too (and possibly has, but not
in my local area). The capetown group seems to have the
philosopy.....It is my personal oppinion, that S would be well
servered if groups would meld Free-mo and S-MOD....Call it "Free-moS-
MOD"....To take S ot the next level...

Some time ago, I established a Free-moS email list, for the
discussion of developing Free-moS. I think that list would be a
great place to dicuss the benefits of each system and to work out a
best practices at acheiving commonality...If your interested, do a
group search for Free-moS.

For those of you not familiar with the Sn2 standards, they are
available at:
   http://www.narrowtracks.com/Sn2/Free-Mo/index.htm

The development of those standards...Through an open
public/international forum was not easy. But it has proven worth
while. I'm working on an 1:64 article outlining it's evolution from
the HO Free-mo standards...
