I have a couple of RS3 models that have performed flawlessly through the years.

The only American Models engine that ever caused me a problem was an
Alco FA. Out of the box it derailed when entering a superelevated
curve. I traced the problem to the screw holding one truck to the
frame. The truck swiveled right and left OK, but the screw was too
tight to allow it to rock back and forth or from side to side.
Loosening the screw a half turn cured the problem.

The other usual suspects include (1) the gauge of the wheels, (2) the
gauge of the switch, plus (3) the humidity in the room. I hesitate to
mention these, because, as the saying goes, you can't teach your
grandmother to suck eggs.
