I failed to mention in my original post that I'm hoping to be able to build
this thing as a 1-piece table-top layout and set it in CASTER-WHEELS so that
it can be wheeled around easily by one person. And transporting it won't be
a problem because I have access to a low-boy type, enclosed trailer that has
internal clearances of 6' 6" wide by either 12' or 14' long (can't remember
for sure about the length). The trailer has a drop-gate type door on the
rear, so getting it loaded (even by myself) should be no problem. My
biggest concern (other than making the track fit in the available space, is
FRAMING the benchwork to support the size and tolerate being rolled around.
As for the tighter-than-prototype curves on the layout looking a little
undersized for 50' cars, etc... that's not a concern as long as they will
track well. Since it is a display layout, I'm not so much worried about
prototypical accuracy... just smooth operation.
