I have built several Rex locos. Never have I needed any kind of glue. 
Many of the parts have pins that are a force fit into their mounting 
holes (like the tanks under the running boards). Some parts must be 
secured with the so-called "speed nuts" that slide over mounting pegs 
from the inside the body shell. Regarding the cab, I have always chosen 
not to secure the cab at all, preferring it to be removable. (Perhaps 
this is because I never liked the Pennsy-style cap and wound up 
replacing the cabs with different ones.)

Don't be intimidated. I built my first Rex kit (a Suburban) when I was 
in junior high school. I was too young to know it was supposed to be 
difficult.
