John, This past weekend I finally finished a rebuilding of my
turntable. Years ago I purchased a wooden kit made by H&D models of an
adjustable O & S scale turntable. It was really a deep O scale unit
that didn't look too swift. I ran it with a hand crank system from
Diamond M. But the time came when I said this isn't working and I tore
out everything, rebuilt the turntable, rebuilt the pit and powered it
with the New York Railway supply indexing system--it works very nicely
now.
I would think that the same indexing system would work with a
transfer table. I would consider playing with a mechanism from a flat
bed scanner for the actual mechanical parts. Scanners can be bought
used for just a few bucks and generally consist of a sprocket and chain
drive that is very precisely made. Power it with the stepper motor from
New York RR and you should have a workable system.
