Brian, V&T Shops made conversions for the MDC shay to Sn3. Originally, these were white metal conversions (and many had boilers too), in later years, some may have been resin. To my knowledge, these are no longer available (I think the proprietor, Dale Darney, has passed away). These kits do come up on ebay from time to time. I do not remember V&T making a metal cab for the shay, they did make a metal Heisler cab. I'm not sure why you think the wood cabs look wrong. First of all, the MDC shay is small for a Sn3 shay, probably only 30-42ton (if 2- truck). Many of which had wood cabs. The MDC model is probably too small for a 3-truck. That said, the Goodyear lumber company of Pennsylvania had several wood cab 3-truck shays. I'd think they were 70ton or less. Metal vs. wood was more about the construction date of the loco, not the size. Some modelers are using the Bachmann 3-truck shay for Sn3. This is better in size. Do a few web searches and you might find images. I think banta's cab is actuall for the Bachmann. These can be converted to from HO to Sn3. If you do not want to do the conversion, contact Keith Weisman....The simplist way to make the conversion results in the couplers being just off center, but they should function sufficiently if your curves are not excessively tight.
