Bill and Friends, I always find it interesting in our little world how
little support we give some of our suppliers and yet many of us buy more
stuff than we'll ever use. Not to toot my horn too loudly but I also
have built several of the BTS structures: Cabin Creek mine (about 2/3
done), the post office, loading dock, the Milwaukee engine house, and
some little shack (Greely's maybe). All of these are very nice kits. I
do think however, like Bill mentions, we just don't have that many
layouts under construction, so I guess many of these kits will be on the
top shelf of the closet or crisscrossing the country after a e-bay
auctions for years to come
On the other hand, (and this is the problem us moderates have--we
always see both sides of a discussion) all these kits can cost a lot
more than scratch building. I was thinking of adding a generic business
to my little town of DeerLodge. It was a Sunday afternoon fairly early,
so I got out some Evergreen clapboard siding and all those packages of
Grandt windows that I've seemed to have collected. In about 3 hours, I
had put together a typical two story building featuring a store front ,
a residence above, with an outside staircase and an attached woodshed!
I painted the building the next night. So now I have a unique building,
didn't have to figure out someone else's plans, and I would guess the
total price at about $30. At other times I have been fortunate in
being able to trade my photography services for product, which generally
creates a win-win situation for a couple of valued clients.
