Hi Guys,
Not that enough electrons haven't already gone to their deaths over
this, but I'll add my 4 cents (I'm long winded, and I'm accounting
for inflation.) First to restate the obvious, we are railroad
modelers. Therefore we may jump at a chance to buy a new piece of
rolling stock, but we figure we can use any building that is
available when we get to that phase of construction. My trackplan is
designed around the movement of one passenger car. If that car was
not available in S, but was about to be, you can bet I'd hork up the
dough to buy one. I even bought a Southern gondola from Jim King
because I am interested some of his future projects, and they won't
come if #1 sells poorly. (The car arrived today by the way. It
looks very interesting. Thanks, Jim.) Now these cars needs to run
past some scenery. How about a coal yard, or a lumber yard, or maybe
a junk yard. See what I mean. It may not be that critical to us the
exact industry on the layout, and if it is that critical, then we
probably have to scratch build it anyway. And you think steam
engines are road specific! I'd be thrilled if some erstwhile
manufacturer were to announce a model of the Richmond, Indiana
passenger station. I need one, but how many other PRR guys would buy
one? (The PRR is a major road too. Not one of those shortlines like
the SBD, UP, or NYC;~) ) The manufacturer would sell two if he kept
one for himself! So a lot of buildings are either too specific to
sell more than a few so they don't get produced, or not specific
enough to get us off our wallets, today.
My next problem is that I have buildings from all the S structure
folks that are collecting dust in their boxes. I plan to build them
some day, but I need to put down some track right now. Buildings can
come later. I know. They might be here later, but I'll take my
chances. In the last year and a half I've tried to swear off
buildings and rolling stock and just buy track, but I can't. I'm a
bit of a junkie. I am a bit shocked to hear that Trainstuff kits
didn't sell well. I share some of Bob W.'s feelings about them, but
I about about five myself. I guess I just thought everyone else was
buying them too.
Lastly, my renters are three months behind, I just had to have the
cat's tail amputated, and Christmas is a week and a half away, so if
I've been a behind on my S purchases, you manufacturers will just
have to forgive me. I mention these last three not because I'm
seeking sympathy, but because this is a hobby, and it's funding gets
cut first.
One of the things I really like about S, as Bill Winans mentioned,
is that I know the people behind the companies. So I try to support
my friends, but there is only so much I can do.
