RS-2's several years ago - don't remember the details now, but the
gear had cracked. It cost $95; $75 for the tooling setup and $5 each
for 4 gears (I bought 3 extras). I dealt with Raoul Martin at NWSL.
They machined the gears out of delrin which would outlast the original
molded plastic ones. NWSL had the gears in stock (after making mine),
or did at the time (1999).

Roger -

I thought about letting this reply come to you just out of pure
cussedness, but thought better of it.

I had a gear crack on one axle of my RS-2, causing it to "lope". I
simply removed a couple of teeth on each side of the crack, and the
problem was solved. However, if it had continued, I would have removed
the gear entirely, and let the thing run with three powered axles. In
prototype lexicon, this would be known as "cutting out a traction motor".

Anyway, the message that inadvertently went to Bob Werre was quite
windy, so maybe he'll forward it to the list, but basically, I made a
paste of Bartender's Friend and water and used it to lap the axle
housings to free up the drives. Although I haven't yet, I suggest
Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil to lubricate the axles, especially after
the fantastic results in my automobiles.

I also did some detail upgrading on the body shells and converted the
electrics to 8-wheel pickup and return. There's a picture of the
upgraded RS-2 with an exhaust stack conducive to an air-cooled
supercharger in the "Files" section.

Bob Nicholson, sending this to the right place this time
