I have always believed that the advantage of the three point gauge was that 
it automatically widened the gauge on curves.  To do this properly the 
spacing between the two gauge points on the arms would require a specific 
value.

Using the roller type gauge or the NASG flat gauge would require some 
eye-ball adjustments on curves.
