Gents....

The results are in for Quiz #1 and Arden Goehring is the winner! He has
already received his prize which was to hold the subject 250 tone crane
car in his hands and drool over it. Other folks guessed at an HO
Bachmann crane, but Arden was astute enough (as was Bill Winans) to
recognize a Lionel O gauge crane as the starting point for this
S-scale-like model. Actually, this is a multi-scale model since the
Buckeye trucks are S scale, the couplers are HO scale, the Lionel body
is O gauge/scale, and the decals are gosh knows what (they were found in
a drawer). The sheaving (rigging) pulleys were hand made and assembled
from tiny washers. This model represents a steam-powered crane as used
in the 1940s. Yes, toy trains do have a place on scale layouts. Where
else are ya gonna get a crane for the wreck train? Don't hold your
breath waiting for Overland Models and the $350 price tag. Let us not
be overly picky about these things or else S will forever lack variety.
I must admit that this crane is only as accurate as Lionel made it since
none of the basic overall dimensions were changed. It was not spliced,
narrowed, or anything really major. It is not an exact replica of any
known prototype, but is just a good old Lionel crane made to look as
realistic as possible. A lot of detail removing and replacing took
place by a very skilled craftsman (not me) and the results speak for
themselves.

Quiz #2 is now under way. Yes, there will be a prize for the winner.
For this quiz, you need to look in my photo album titled "Ed L's stuff"
and look at photo number two as uploaded by Bill Lane. (Thanks for your
help, Bill) In this photo you will see a side view of the 250 ton crane
from quiz #1 and also a few other cars. Keep in mind that steam cranes
needed a source of fuel (coal, in this case) and water (no known
substitute) which adds up to something that looks like a tender, but is
really a crane fuel car. Note one of these cars just to the left of the
crane.

This so-called "fuel car" is a non-S car converted to operate
realistically with S scale equipment. The quiz question is: what is
the heritage of this fuel car? Don't all vote at once, since the Yahoo
computer system might get overloaded. First guy to come up with the
correct answer wins the prize.

Have fun...Ed L.
