It's really up to you what's acceptable.  The PEM metal container has the 
shape of a container with it's corner castings &c, but of course they need 
some markings.  Several AM trailers are really painted to represent 
containers on chassis, the "K" Line, Southern, Evergreen, and APL, but 
anyone who looks close enough will see that they're trailer bodies, not ISO 
containers.  I've even taken some Lionel trailer bodies that have container 
markings and set them on top of AM trailer bodies in Husky Stack cars.  But 
we know those aren't really containers.

In front of dedicated intermodalistas, I wouldn't do it. But in front of the 
local S gaugers, I might.
