AM makes dummy scale couplers with a long shank.  They were used for one of the 
AM passenger car types- I forget which.  These can be cut off and a new hole 
drilled to yield any length you want.  Mount the couplers to the trucks where a 
hiraiI coupler would go.  I coupled my AM U25B's this way and they work well 
and look good.  Remember to paint them rust color. When's the last time you saw 
a prototype with black couplers?

  You're right about them putting the two locos too close together, especially 
  they're if used as pushers, on curves. The push force will be transmitted 
  by the hand-rail stanchions.

  I have no answer except to state that if they were mine I think I'd simply 
  draw-bar-connect them.
