If it's not a problem with roadbed and such, KD has (in HO) extended shank
couplers. Similar to the common #5, these will spread the units apart a bit
more.  Though not on my '60's as of yet, I did use the technique on another
close-coupled pair - the Uboats maybe  (At work so I'm guessing).
