Jim,
I would suggest you cut your own for two reasons: 1. you can ramp down to any
height from turnouts or other commercial track work. I go down to 1/16 and
1/32 resting the last few feet of industrial trackage and yard tracks on the
ground what ever that may be. It is easy to emulate buried ties and requires
much less ballast and the rail base is the same height as the adjacent ground
which by my eye is what I see in the real world. 2. I cut the tie strips in
2-3 ft. sections and paint them with acrylics introducing slight color
variations as I paint them - with my fingers- with grays, sienna's and umbers.
there is much variation in the real world which is easily emulated using this
method but often absent when one stains a batch or air brushes. Then I cut to
length several strips at a time. This also allows me to vary the apparent
depth of the ties by varying the height of the ground the ties rest on. this
is probably all as clear as the mud the tie rest on maybe a clinic some where
some day??? I think what your train runs through is as important as the train.

Tennessee Earl in East Tennessee overlooking the beautiful Tennessee river,
drop in some time.

Subject: {S-Scale List} TIES : Kappler or Mt. Albert?

Looking for opinions (or facts) about the cross-ties offered by Kappler and Mt.
Albert... how do the products compare to each other? Anyone got any good or bad
reports about dealings with either of these sources?
