If I may, let me add a couple of comments regarding the #6 turnouts. I
have had some of mine in place for about 20 years, although many have
been trashed for various reasons. I've never noticed any major problems
with derailments but after a while the built-in contacts won't work.
Obviously this comes from the ballast and the dirt that will accumulate
over time, plus possibily some sagging in the plastic. Many I just tore
up, as I can build a new turnout in the time it takes to rebuild one.
Others, I have torn out the plastic drawbar and contacts and replaced
with circuit board material and wired using the switchmotor contacts. I
recently visited Skip Romig's new layout (Dallas area) and he is doing
that right away to avoid future problems.
