The graying of the hobby is not new or exclusive to S Scale - I'm involved with
the 3mm Society here in the UK

3mm is 1/100 and originates out of Triang's commercial operation which ceased 40
years ago. 3mm has direct parallels with S. Triang used 12mm gauge track which
is too narrow (just the same as OO) I see this as the equivelent of American
Flyer/Hi-Rail - conversely there is a growing finescale group that use 14.2mm
track gauge which is the equivelent of the S scale crowd.

With the renewal of the latest membership (800 members) I asked them to fill in
a simple tick box questionaire I've has 550 replies and inputted 400
questionaires onto the database.

Below are just a few things that the Q threw up

• Only 7% of membership below the age of 45
• 20% in 45-55 age range
• 36% in 55-65 age range
• 23% in 65-75 age range and 14% over 75

• 24% don’t do much modelling these days
• 11% model in another scale but not 3mm
• 34% model in 3mm and another scale
• 11% are collectors
• 20% model in 3mm only

I suspect that the S scale crowd is very similar - maybe NASG should do a
questionaire - if the powers decide they want to - talk to me - I can help them
frame the right questions!
