Dave (and all),

I had the same results on the first 5 or 10 that I assembled, but with a little
more experience and a few files and some twist-drills to drill out the holes
that the nuckle's pins go into, the Sergent couplers I have operate FLAWLESSLY,
and the cars do not move at all when uncoupling... not that it would be
entirely unprototypical for them to move just a tad, as I have seen this happen
at least a few times in real life.

It is also true that assembling the current version of the Sergent couplers can
be a pain, especially when you're new at it and haven't refined the task to a
science, but imagine trying to assemble the original version of these in HO
(which I have done at least 40 or 50 of (prior to the release of the upgraded
HO version)). But I recommend the following "helper-tool" for assembling the
present version of the S scale Sergent coupler :

Binder clips :

I guess "alligator clips" would also work.

HOWEVER, "IF" Sergent does upgrade the S coupler as he has done the HO coupler,
it will most assuredly be offered in both kit and pre-assembled form. And the
kit-form will be highly refined and far simpler to assemble due to the new
self-alignment design it will have (as the HO version has)... you won't be able
to goof it up.

So don't give up on them yet... a FAR BETTER version of the S scale Sergent is
on the near horizon!

  Subject: {S-Scale List} Sergent couplers(continued)

Hi All, update on my experiment with sergent couplers. I assembled
the first group and gave them a try. Assembly was not fun !! and I
must need more practice cause they work kinda stiff. The cars are not
heavy enough to stand still when opening the knuckles or coupling so I
apparently need to refine my assembly skills. I like the concept but
don't like the results so far. The experience makes me appreciate KD
802's and their knuckle springs for what they are!!!.....dave
