Is there any chance a local modeler is in one of the scales you are looking at? 
 If so, could you get your "fix" on that layout, then have your layout be the 
other scale?  A downside is that you won't control that other layout, and might 
get pressure to switch to that scale for your own modeling (speaking from 
experience from helping out on a local HO layout).
