Join the club.  I'm modeling S standard gauge.  I'm also dabbling in On30
with a totally fictional/freelance bent.  On30 is a caricature scale IMHO,
buildings can be smaller but still O and it can be done on the cheap.  Also
have you considered doing Colorado NG in Sn3?  Now there is the best of
worlds, S scale and fine looking equipment is available.  Change your local
to Denver where both worlds met and you have a solution to your problem.  Of
course a little modeler's license will need to be invoked...
