Ahh, Bill; Since it appears you are doing your yard modules, wouldn't a mixture of blackish cinder and dirt (with weeds) be more appropriate?
I'm sure some other colors could be mixed in to make the "blended" look. Maybe this would be a good way to extend the more expensive hobby ballast products, use them to add varied color to the bulk quartz product.
