Pieter, You are correct sir. As a mater of fact as I previously reported I wanted to use Bondo between the rails for most of the yards track to simulated that greasy mudding schmutz yard where you can barely see the rails and almost no ties. I was talked out of that for probably good reason. I am on a bit of a time deadline. Historically speaking the only times my modules have been worked on or upgraded is just before the CSJJ Get Together. This is no exception with it about 10 days away. If the Bondo thing did not work we would not have modules to use on that side of the layout.
I plan on making the yard tracks a lot dirtier (probably this time next year) to differentiate them from the main lines in the center. Just before I bought this material I was on a trip where a road followed a single track mainline for about 6 miles. I was trying to look at it as best I could and still drive. Yes some of it was a speckled mix of contrasting colors. But some of it was very uniform in color too. it will depends on where the ballast came from. That made me happier. Did I tell you it cost me .20 per POUND? That wins rock paper scissors every time! Ahh, Bill; Since it appears you are doing your yard modules, wouldn't a mixture of blackish cinder and dirt (with weeds) be more appropriate? I'm sure some other colors could be mixed in to make the "blended" look. Maybe this would be a good way to extend the more expensive hobby ballast products, use them to add varied color to the bulk quartz product.
