Yes, Ed, for the past 30 years, I would be classified an "operator" (when I
have had functional layouts). I have been an "operator" since at least the
mid-'70's. For me, once I began to be introduced to 1:1 railroading, I soon
wanted to translate that into miniature. Thus, I ceased seeing the building
of railroad models as a reason for being. Instead, I begin to see the models
as a means to the end: Operation.
My current layout "challenge" is to build a fun-to-operate S scale layout
(circa mid-60s) inside this small hobby room. I only have a total of about
9'6" x 14'10" to work with. Into this is to go an around the walls urban
switching theme. Though I really don't have room for all the trappings of a
"good" operationally oriented layout, I'm doing the best I can with what I
have. If/when it gets finished enough for structured operation... I think
it will be a fun to switch.
