When building a Layout, one of the challenges is that of grade. While
prototypical roads like to keep grades to 2%, or less. For model railroaders,
especially in S, is the issue of grade v amount of available space. A 2% grade
in S equals 15.625 feet, 100 scale feet, for a rise of .375 (3/18 ").
The question for you Layout owner / operators, is what are you using for
grades on your systems.
The other question is the amount of power required to haul cars up these
grades. What I really would like to compile, and perhaps place on our group
site is a list of, for a X% grade, using:
Type of powered units, Steam, Diesel, Brass, Plastic, weight(s) of each,
number of powered units required by number of cars being pulled, both freight
and passenger.
Example: Using a powered A-B-B set of SHS, F-7s, to a pull 35 freight
consist up my 4% grade.
Since reading the post from those who operate, thought I would bring this
up at this time.
Have to admit, that I have vested interested in all of this, as want to
incorporate this information in to both my Layout design, as well as actual
operations in assigning power to trains. In as much as I am modeling
California, circa 1957, and as we all know anything that comes into, or leave
has to cross over mountains.
Another question is that of Layout design sofware, that is usable for S
scale.
