Cindy:
I have reworked one of these so far but I am not taking on work
at this time. I have way too many irons in the fire and I need to get
caught up
These are notorious for the "U" join on the input side of the
first gearbox slipping. The fix is to have a hole drilled through the
plastic "U" join and the shaft and have it pinned.
All four of the crosshead links are too long and need to be
shortened. If you observe closely they bang into the back of the
steamchest. On some models it is possible to move the steamchest
forward enough to allow the links to clear. After the first of the
year I plan on having replacement parts available. If your model has
crosshead links that are bouncing off the back of the steamchest it
can lead to forcing the crosshead out of the guides and bending it. I
fixed one here in California that had that happen. I was told the
owner now has 30-40 hours of run time and no problems so far.
Having trouble with the gears is a new one for me. I know having
the tender uncouple from the engine can be a problem. This is a simple
but time consuming fix and the locomotive should probably be rewired
at the same time.
