One of the tanks that works nicely in our scale is a Corgi line of diecast
tanks that were made years ago. They were marketed as being 1/60 scale, but
when measured against dimensioned drawings they actually scaled out to be 1/64.
One in particular was the US M-60 tank. Things like the cannon and cuppola
guns needed to be addressed and other detail elements need to be added. Like
the driving lights, but when realistically painted makes for a very convincing
scale model. Once again photo references can help greatly. The size in
relation to an SHS flatcar may appear that the tank is too wide for the
flatcar, but having come upon some photos of a military load being transported
by rail showed that the tank tracks did indeed overhang the car sides on each
side. Unfortunately Corgi isn't making these any more, however they can be
found at toy and train swap meets as well as on Ebay. Also, while the
railroads used their own equipment to ship military loads, a SHS flatcar painte
d and decaled as a DODX car is impressive.
Hope this helps.
