I've been using premixed joint compound for most of my rockwork. Painted
but otherwise unmodified, it does tend to easily chip & leave white flecks
exposed. To solve this, I mix in black water-based paint, which tints it
gray. I've also tinted some to a tan color- a nice base for concrete. Note
that the mixture dries much lighter than it appears in the bucket.

Lately, I've been using cork (roadbed & sheet material) for asphalt.
Stained gray, it has a texture that a solid painted surface can't
duplicate.
