Just the benchwork was started. No trains were running at that
time. But most every other layout in the local area had minor damage.

E-quakes are directional. No doubt about it. In my neighborhood,
some brick chimneys cracked where the bricks intersected the roof
line. But only on those chimneys where the short dimension faced a
particular way. If the chimney was turned 90 degrees, then the
chimney had no damage.

Ask me how I know that obscure fact. Two days after the quake, our
neighborhood had an "E-quake Party" and all the neighbors from far
and wide converged to compare damage and to see who needed help.
Ever see a tidal wave in a swimming pool? One of our neighbor ladies
was out watering the flowers and the tidal wave knocked her off her
feet and into the flower beds. Her description was most vivid since
she saw the whole thing rise up right in front of her eyes.

I was at work at the time and missed all the fun. But I remember
later in the evening Dick Karnes calling me from Seattle to tell me a
major bridge over SF Bay had partially fallen down. That was news to
me since the electricity was out and our TV and radios were not
working. But the phones still worked and Dick got through. Seems as
though the outside world knew a lot more about what was happening
than us local folks.

Cheers...Ed L.
