Your right, it's very much like buying an old Kinsman kit and just using
the instructions. Actually if you knew Fred you would understand his
way enjoying the hobby. Fred was mostly into O scale and he loved to
run his stuff fast. Several times he had major derailments resulting to
major damage to his brass engines. He once built a holding device to
hold his engines so he could repair and rebuild them. It resembled a
BBQ spit including the crank so he could rotate the engine as needed. I
sometimes think he dumped engines on the floor just so he could fix them!

I have one of the Regal Kits Milwaukee gondolas which is a typical
craftsman kit with the usual lead castings. However, Fred turned his
own brake appliances from brass. He also made his own floor for an AM
boxcar from metal with simulated wooden planks and again hand turned
brake gear that works!

And speaking of dumping things on the floor and their damage. We had a
discussion some weeks ago about that very thing. Last weekend yours
truly with the advice of one of our newer members installed clear side
guards along some critical layout edges. I obtained some thin GE Lexon
that the plastics store cut for me. This stuff is great to work
with--it drills, screws and cuts much better than Plexiglas. I was able
to form it into a curved radii about 12" in diameter very easily. It is
also super clear so you can hardly see it. I paid less than $40 for
about one half sheet cut to my specs. Now only time will tell if it
will withstand being scratched easily. I do know that standard plex can
get pretty nasty after awhile.
