Hi Roland, The selection of modern era S scale diesels is pretty
sparse. SHS makes a sweet running and well detailed switcher, American
models makes a good running GP9, GP35 and SD60, they all need some
detail work but are good starting points. The brass that I recall
seeing is an Alco rs11, EMD SD50, SD60, GP38-2 and SD9. I'm sure some
of the longtime S scalers on here can tell you of some others. The
shortage of equipment is more than made up for by the ideal size of S
scale though. Unless one wants to model bigtime short headway
railroading there is enough stuff available to build a layout. Someone
with your talent would have no trouble making nice locos from the
American models or SHS locos. I'd suggest buying one and building it
to see what you think and then sell it into the heavy demand if you
decide S is not your thing, you would have no shortage of buyers!
What did you have in mind for setting and equipment? There's enough
hoppers to serve S scale industry but a shortage of Gondolas , lumber
cars, mechanical reefers etc. I've got a feeling things will get
better with the next few years as the O scale crowd settles into
layout building instead of collecting and discovers that it takes a
lot of room to run that big stuff.
