Group:

I have found a brand of firearm cleaning/lubricating oil that will
clean wheels and leave a thin coating of oil on the rails for better
pickup and smoother running.

It is made by Remington, called Rem-Oil, and I apply a drop to each
wheel on a locomotive or car and the gunk just dissolves. The oil
keeps dirt in suspension on the rails so it doesn't interfere with
electrical pickup, and wheel sparking is reduced to a minimum.

Also, I have been lubricating axle journals with just a drop of Mobil
1 synthetic motor oil with fantastic results. I use a scrap piece of
hook-up wire to pick up a small drop and apply it. There's a fantastic
difference, and I use 10W-30. I can't imagine what 0W-30 might do.

I have also used the Mobil 1 to soften old grease in locomotive
gearboxes that haven't run in a while with the same results; in fact,
the flywheels on the motors actually make them coast a little, like
they were supposed to do in the first place.
