I am building a local oil and coal distributor. I have seen pictures
of a hopper car on a short trestle, dumping coal into a pile under the
trestle. For the trucks there is a ramp down to the pile, where the
trucks back in and load from the pile (I guess by shoveling, since I
don't see a conveyor).

What I can't figure out from the picture is what the ties look like on
that trestle. Are they full ties - do they go all the way between the
rails? It seems like the coal would pound them to splinters after a
while. If they don't go across, how do the rails stay in gauge? It
seems like the cars would push the rails outward.

This is late 1920's by the way. Sure would like some help on this, as
I need a receiver so I can need to build a hopper car.
