Humbug!

We all know that the Gaugian will print most anything even though it be
modeling quality, subject or image deficient. Unfortunately the
almighty buck has a lot to do with it. I did a number of covers for the
magazine, generally when his advertisers were paying for it. Don H.
doesn't like to pay for photography. Unfortunately when you get
something for nothing it's generally worth about the same. I do this
battle nearly everyday, somehow photographers should work for nothing,
but everybody else in the production chain (printers, mailing houses,
graphic artists, etc.) get paid. About a year ago a publisher of a
medical magazine called to 'offer' a large project to photograph a
number of medical specialists who were putting ads in his magazine. He
wanted the work for nothing, with the idea that the doctors would come
back to me later for more work. I asked him why he didn't give away his
ad space with the idea of the doctors coming back later for more ads--he
got really irritated at me and used several choice words to describe his
displeasure.

At one time I did work for several of the larger suppliers and
publishers in the S market. I charged them a greatly reduced fee to
produce what I thought was some nice work. At this time I only do
regular work for one publisher and everything we do is in HO, they seem
to understand what goes into the work even though their particular
market is smaller than the Gaugian.

Is there a solution to all of this? maybe. Dick has mentioned that the
SHS sectional trackage would have been a 'okay' way to go. Well, stage
a contest to see who can rebuild their AF layout with SHS trackage.
There is no reason why AM couldn't do the same thing. A neat cover shot
and some before and after shots would tell the story. One can make
eggnog from cracked eggs!
