Nearly every academic journal in my field publishes a paper copy, then posts the entire journal to the web when the following issue is printed. I can read the full text of any article on the web a month or so after it is distributed in print. I do most of my research right here, in front of my computer screen. The same ads that appear in the print version appear in the web version. Advertisers don't seem to mind. They support these journals as much as they ever did.
We often talk about appealing to the "next generation." Since the next generation is getting to be about 40-50 years old, we should realize that there are two places "young people" immediately go for information about something new: Google and Wikipedia. Nobody I know goes to the library to look for some magazines. Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S_scale. It is very interesting how this deals with Flyer vs. Scale. Try a google search on "s scale" and you will see it is dominated by Flyer. My suggestion is that every scale club should have a web site, every ambitious modeler with enough layout to photograph a scene should have a web site. Ask some 20 year old how to put meta-data in the web page so the google search will distinguish the page from the Flyer pages. The web, for all its faults, is a significant way to publish and reach about half the people in the U.S. if they are looking for information. -Michael Eldridge Now, back to hand laying three more switches in anticipation of the BASS club coming here in January.
