Ken, I too have given Don H. 'free' work over the years. However,
that's also how I make my living and I can't give away my work and
expect to survive. Imagine if a bunch of guys giving away what you
make--how long would you survive. Or how about your local prison
opening a factory selling what you make for little or nothing!
Do me a favor and take a typical magazine (it could be an old S Gaugian
for that matter). Cut out the photographs and see what you have left.
I think the only exception to that might be Reader's Digest.
A Since Dick thought the cover was terrible I was simply responding to
what I know to be part of the problem--terrible editing and/or
photography! If we have people who can do things right--let them do a
good job. However just like AM or SHS or the S Gaugian an investment is
made so there must be a return on that investment. I have made that
investment, done good work that has helped bring in a return for them,
but my returns have been slim or none because I've tried to be a nice
guy! That being said, I have pretty much been able to support my new
train purchases with my work. Since that hasn't been happening much--I
can no longer purchase; meaning. we all loose.
In my business, I'm taught to question everything in regards to
marketing. If someone is successful (like Don H.), I would say how can
we make him more successful! When Pacific Rail Shops started having
problems, I suggested having the models made RTR with metal grabs--he
refused to consider it. Where is Pacific Rail now? Yes it was their
decision and perhaps their loss--but also my loss and to some degree
yours!
I received a couple of notes like yours indicating that they thought the
contest idea would be a great way of improving the magazine and some
folks' layout. They thought it was a positive statement on how to
improve things. Ken, if done correctly it would sell magazines and
track--what could be better.
When I've done work for the Gaugian, SHS or even Kalmbach I'm generally
on a deadline and I'm expected to do something worthwhile that sells
product because it's my obligation as a professional.
Have a good Christmas!
Bob

I read the digest version of the list and spent a hour preparing a
answer to "it makes me cry". I am glad I got that out of my system, I
will keep it to myself I realize now that there is no need to feed this
silly discussion.
Don't like what Don prints? He has been printing it for 40 years,
supporting a family, sending kids to college and living a good life.
MARKET SAYS...... Don is correct!
