Thorin, Everything I own and run has scale wheels and body mounted Kadee couplers. I was running 50" PRS cars around the Christmas tree this year on the SHS starter loop track set, which I am pretty sure is the same radius are American Flyer track. I even did some limited backing with no problems. Coupling is another matter as I only have 1 straight section between the 90 turns. The cars have to be in the center of the straight track. But it all runs fine...
