Rolland,
I have several of the Soundtraxx DSX sound decoders installed and am
satisfied with their sound. However, I also have installed their Tsunami in a
steam locomotive and the sound is much better by comparison(16 bit vs 8 bit)
and it is a combined, motor and sound decoder. Actually, their are pluses and
minuses with each. The biggest minus with the diesel Tsunami is it has yet to
hit the market. I believe it to be in the near future, but that is just my
opinion. I feel confident that it will be well worth the wait! With the DSX,
you still need to install a motor decoder (I use Lenz Gold) which can create
more work and difficulty with wiring and programming CV's. However, you have
the option of locating the two decoders for optimum fit.
I also have installed a Loksound decoder. Two problems I have encountered
with them is: a. The speakers they use are 100 ohm impedenance vs the standard
and more readily available U.S. 8 ohm. b. I had to wait nine months for the
foreign manufacturer to fill my order for a 1.57" speaker. The U.S.
distributor did little to help the situation!
If you have no experience with DCC and installation, I highly recommend a
newer Kalmbach publication, "DCC Guide, How to select and use your command
control system," by Don Fiehman. It's a very comprehensive book and covers
very well related, good to know information. I got mine discounted through
Amazon.
