Hi Bill; The layout appeared to be self contained, it was a hollow square with the main track looping around and different elements on each side.
I am pretty sure the hot metal and bottle cars as well as some of the heavy mill flats were Walthers HO models with S trucks, but they did look quite good. The regular flats and gons loaded with rail were Rex/Putt cars. The latest Kalmbach Design annual has an HO 4X8 steel mill that is pretty interesting. Pieter Bill Lane <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Pieter, This may have been at a NASG convention a while back, but was not as complete. I remember seeing something with a lot of copper pipe soldered together in the lobby outside of the venders room. The steel handling cars looked pretty good in your photos. Did you get any more info on it? Was it apart of the builder's layout? I know of someone that is considered to be an authority on steel mills. Researching them is pretty much his life. He has made a small side business out of selling drawings and data. His HO layout is ALL about making steel. It might be open on the layout tours of this RPM meet coming up. http://www.phillynmra.org/RPMMeet.html A recent Dirty Jobs show has an hour on working in a steel recycling plant which was pretty good. A recent issue of TRAINS has an article about moving ladle cars in Indiana. The Edgar Thompson Steel plant near Pittsburgh was one of the best tours I have ever been on. They are only one of the 3 (I think) plants in the US making NEW steel. The rest are all gone. We drove around the area in the tour bus for 45 minutes looking at empty lots where other steel plants used to be. Everyone else is just a recycling and reforming plant of existing steel.
