Welcome. I hope you enjoy S scale as much as I have. I'm assuming you
are switching from HO. The turnout numbers are pretty much the same.
True #6 turnouts will handle any S locomotive, as long as there is
about 6 to 8 inches of straight approach. #7 or #8 look better, #5 can
work if you don't have big steam. Some of the commercial turnouts in S
have #6 frogs, but much shorter geometry in the points, and can be a
problem for large steam.

Curves are a funny thing. A 24 inch curve is on the generous side of
moderate for HO. If you scale that up to S, it is 33 inches, which
would be considered fairly sharp for S. I can't come up with the math
for this, but somehow 24 inches in HO seems like it matches 40 inches
in S.
