I think I have a pretty good feel for S scale standard-gauge numbers, as
follows:

1. The NASG has around 1900 members, about 20 percent of whom are "scalers."
That figures to about 380 people.

2. For every NASG scaler there are probably four more who are not NASG
members. If so, there are about 1900 scalers.

3. Sn3 is the dominant narrow-gauge modeling scale. I'd guess there are more
than 20,000 of these people, half of whom are really avid. If there is a ratio
of 10 narrow-gauguers for every scale standard-gauger, there are around 2000
scale standard gaugers.

4. I believe Don Heimburger has around 7000 S Gaugian subscribers. If the 20
percent figure is representative, that means around 1400 of his subscribers are
scalers. But because so many scalers are turned off by the S Gaugian, I would
reduce this figure by two-thirds (to 500).

5. My tenure as editor of "3/16 'S'cale Railroading" suggests to me that for
every issue purchased/subscribed, it is shared among five people.

All of these semi-facts suggest there are around two thousand of us
standard-gauge scalers. Given this number as a ball-park figure, it is truly
amazing that people like Dan Navarre (River Raisin) and Don Thompson (SHS)
consistently come up with best-selling products, given the economics of basic
order quantities.
