Hi Dave and All -- I think you hit on part of Sn3's numerical advantage over standard gauge scale S -- it is similar to HO and can be operated in similar spaces. What you missed is that Sn3 brass was available YEARS before standard gauge S brass, and in very high quality once Bill Peter got involved. As scale S is an "adoptive" scale (virtually no one starts there), the new folk were after the very best, not just a lateral transfer of scales. P-B-L backed up their brass with extraordinary plastic rolling stock kits to ensure continued usefulness. It took a long time for standard gauge scale S products to reach the same level of sophistication as Sn3 already had, about a dozen years or so. There has also been a "consistency" factor in that P-B-L has produced quality Sn3 for nearly 30 years, and has never ceased stocking product (brass models excepted, but even they have been redone several times so that one CAN acquire them). Additionally, the prototype is well known and can't be split into 50 different camps (NYC, PRR, DRG, ATSF, Milw, GN, UP, WP, MP, SOU, SBD, ACL etc, etc, etc...) so producing models is less risky than bringing in a brass model of a RF&P 4-8-4 or a Milw Bi-polar. All this makes for a strong common bond within the Sn3 adherants -- they have had their own "national" convention (the Sn3 Symposium) for at least 20 years.
One really can appreciate the folks like RRM, SWM, OMNICON, ALCO, OMI, SUNSET, ORIENTAL who dove into such shallow waters... Have fun! In all the other scales it's reversed( like the groups setting!) are S scalers just a backwards thinking bunch! Does it have something to do with SN3 track being close to HO gauge? Maybe most folks think they don't have room for larger curves than HO size so they go into SN3 instead of S standard gauge? Dave Yahoo!
