10. Reading the S-scale digest

A note to Ed L. The photos I saw of your
water troughs when I logged in to send this message are fantastic. I'll
now be looking to see an action shot of a NYC Hudson with water spraying
all over the place as she 'scoops on the fly.'

Don...

Ironically, the Editor of MR (Neil) just called me today and asked for an
article on the track pans. So I have to get out the camera and go to work
once again. I am thinking that a photo-shopped picture of water spray all
over the place would be kind of neat. Anyone have a good prototype photo
they could send me as an inspiration? Anyone out there (Werre?) have any
experience at doing this sort of thing?

In the same phone call, he stated that my milk train article will NOT be
running in the June '08 issue as previously stated, but later in the year.
He actually apologized for that. Nice fellow. I like him. Not only that,
but he actually said he would like to run more S scale articles. I don't
imagine he gets very many.

There is no secret to having an article published in a major magazine. You
only need two things: (1) Excellent quality photographs, and (2) Topic of
interest to all scales. Milk trains, track pans, signals, trackwork,
electrical stuff, etc. can all be topics that appeal to those modeling in
other scales. But the use of S scale models to illustrate the article can
and does help to spread the word that S scale exists and that excellent
quality modeling is possible in our favorite size.

If you want to publish an article on how to attach Kadee couplers to an S
Scale America tank car (for example), there are S-only oriented publications
better suited to that particular type of topic. The mainstream multiscale
magazines probably would not be interested in that kind of topic. Unless it
was in HO, of course.

Writing skills are not needed since all magazines have editors who can
correct your errors and clarify the meaning. Also, every Tom, Dick and
Harry has a digital camera these days and so it is not really even necessary
to take photos yourself. Just ask a friend. A floodlight or two will help,
but is not essential.

The main thing that is needed is the desire to do it and taking time to
prepare the materials. Without those two things, it will never happen.

Cheerfully.....Ed L.
