Hi Ed, I agree, I've learned more about S scale form these guys
than from anywhere else. I bought ONE copy of the S gaugian magazine
years ago and it is my sole publication purchase! I didn't like the
inability to respond to the articles with questions or comments, after
using this group the magazine seemed unnecessary and I'd rather spend
the money on paint, glue or brass wire.
As for making the scale grow? I think the best way is to flip HO
or O scalers, I don't think there's a large pool of new folks out
there waiting to be hit with the S scale lightbulb! If one wants to be
a modlerailroader they will already be a modelrailroader, it's not
something that can be sold to the unwashed. You might get a few
converts if you sent pretty girls to shopping malls with cookies but
the newbies would be a lot of work to cultivate and since they know
nothing they would buy all the wrong stuff and get the manufacturers
all off track making crap.
I'm to the point where I don't really care if S gets new folks cause
I have many options but if I was an S manufacturer I'd push the
running quality and the size to the HO and O guys and lure them over
with some nice new modern era models and some timely articles in
modelrailroader using S scale to illustrate the latest state of the
art in layout design and building. There's no reason these articles
can't be done in S size instead of HO size ,a module or a kitbash
doesn't require that much material.
In the meantime I'll enjoy the group and would invite any
prospective authors to post something here. What are you up to? Got
some modeling hints? Got some modeling questions?...dave
(off to fix the plumbing, another step on the road to a new
layout...a round about trip!!)
