Hi Alex.....Yup, we agree! Some volunteer TALENT is needed to make a
respectable presentation. I am assuming that online volunteers will
be easier to find than the other kind. At least based on the number
of folks on this list that have suggested/hinted that they themselves
would like to become involved with an e-zine effort of some sort. I
have yet to see anyone offer to start up another S-scale-only paper-
based magazine. So why make the job harder than it need be?
While I agree that a traditional magazine in hobby shops would be
more helpful to S scale than another online site, I do not see the
traditional magazine concept being workable or attractive to anyone
with the ability to actually do it. Thus, in my mind at least, the
choice is not between online vs. paper since there is no new viable
paper alternative anyway. Why argue over which is better when one is
non-existent? Sort of like discussing if gasoline is better than
cornohol when there is no cornohol dispensing station within 400
miles of where you live. What's the point of the discussion in the
first place?
Now on the other hand, Mr. Bendever has asked for help. Since then,
all I have read are various negative comments about his efforts. It
does not appear (to me) that much help will be forthcoming. So what
to do? We could all "help" Heimburger. Or NASG's DISPATCH? Or RMC,
MR, Gazette, MRN, RMJ, etc.? But our "help" seems to be limited to
writing emails to this list while at work on someone else's payroll.
Are we truly "givers" in this hobby? Or, are we merely "takers" who
write emails? Or "dreamers" who don't even write an occasional
email? Or are all the various S-only publications too amateurish for
our so-called wonderful abilities? Would something brand new be any
better? Time for looking in the mirror and some introspection.
Looking at what is possible and practical might at least get
us "something" rather than wasting time on dreaming about the
ultimate best thing possible which will most likely never really come
to pass no matter what.
In closing, these same discussions have come up every three years or
so -- as regular as California earthquakes. Every time an S-only
magazine seems to be heading for trouble, this same topic is
rekindled. Wouldn't it be nice to establish some institutional
framework that would allow numerous contributors to send in online
material and have it edited/improved and presented professionally?
We need a mechanism, a process, a procedure, a Leader, a whatever-ya-
wanna-call-it so that all of us can jump in and make a contribution
with little or no effort. We could even name it "S-scale Yahoo
Groups List".
Just a few thoughts with the usual disclaimer that I could be wrong.
